Steam explosion unlocks chicken feather potential for sustainable agriculture: A New Publication

We are excited to introduce a recent study that has been published in the Polymers Journal as part of the UNLOCK project framework. In this joint publication of four UNLOCK partners (CIDETEC, OWS, RISE PROCESSUM and Ł- ŁIT) steam explosion technique is tested to enhance the biodegradability of chicken feathers in soil and improve the management of feather waste - a longstanding challenge in the poultry industry.

Chicken feather waste is a global challenge, with millions of tonnes produced every year. Traditional disposal methods are unsustainable and current feather applications are limited as chicken feathers have a slow biodegradation due to their strong keratin composition.

To find a solution, this study tests the use of steam explosion to improve feather biodegradability. Therefore, feathers are treated with high-pressure steam followed by explosive decompression, altering their structure to enhance biodegradability in soil.

This study shows promising results for the use of feathers in agricultural bioplastics, unlocking their potential for sustainable agriculture.
